Understanding a Hewlett-Packard Laser Jet Memory Upgrade


It is quite likely that you bought an HP Laser Jet printer due to the company’s long reputation for high-quality merchandise and reliable results. Unfortunately, you may have begun to feel that the machine is not performing in the way you expect, it might be very slow to begin a print job or take a tremendous amount of time with the entire printing process. Is it a computer problem? Is it something to do with the printer? It is probably a simple matter of the size of the print jobs and the available memory in the printer. What is the answer? A Hewlett-Packard Laser Jet memory upgrade!

This is actually a fairly common activity and easily done by even a novice computer user. The first thing to know is that all printers will have a maximum amount of data that they can effectively manage at any time, which is their maximum RAM. The amount of HP Laser Jet RAM needed for a particular upgrade depends entirely on the model.

For example, the HP Laser Jet 4000 can use up to 100MB of RAM which is installed in the three available banks and sockets. What are these? Well, just as a CPU has slots into which memory is installed, so too do printers. The new or additional Hewlett-Packard Laser Jet memory devices are simply plugged into these available banks in the order recommended in the device’s literature. For example, a printer with three banks will probably ask that the compatible HP Laser Jet memory devices be installed from the lowest numbered banks and then up from there.

How do you know what sort of HP Laser Jet RAM to buy? Well, generally it is recommended to use the same size cards in each slot, and with none exceeding the capacity of the device capability. For instance, the HP Laser Jet 4000 just mentioned above would be able to accept three 32MB cards in its banks without any problems, but would probably not function optimally if the second HP Laser Jet memory card was 16MB instead of 32MB.

What this means is that an owner should purchase the highest memory that they can afford, but stick with one size for each bank or socket. The specific needs for each Hewlett-Packard Laser Jet memory device will be clearly indicated in the printer’s literature.

Will this improve printer performance? Usually the reason that a printer will have slow-moving print times is due to the fact that it is unable to operate at its peak performance standards. This is usually because it is accepting information from the computer while also simultaneously trying to handle the print job. Often this is the reason the printer does not run a top speed. Once the RAM is expanded, however, it should be able to manage complex or bulky jobs easily.
